NHIF biometric registration guide: Everything you need to know

In 2021, the national health insurer launched the NHIF biometric registration. The move attracted diverse reactions from Kenyans and health stakeholders. However, the process is ongoing and more citizens are urged to submit their details to enjoy better services.

NHIF was founded in 1966 and operates as a department under the Ministry of Health. The fund has service centres across the country, but clients can also access them online. Additionally, the parastatal has developed innovative service delivery methods to serve Kenyans better. So, what is NHIF Biometric registration?

What is biometric registration? Biometrics is a method that uses unique biological characteristics to identify and authenticate an individual digitally. These traits can include the person’s voice, facial features, or fingerprints. One significant advantage of this system is that it reduces fraud cases by accurately identifying individuals. Members will also enjoy efficient service delivery.

Members will also enjoy efficient service delivery.

Previously, customers used their national identification and NHIF cards to identify them before receiving health services in hospitals. However, the biometric system requires that members of the fund register afresh to capture their details online.

The biometric registration process is ongoing and several Kenyans wonder, ”When is the NHIF biometric registration deadline?” The exercise currently does not have any deadline and is a continuous process.

The biometric registration started after proposed NHIF reforms recommended in the Health Financing Report Expert Panel (HEFREP) report. This development aims to reduce wastage, fraud, and abuse. It will ultimately position the insurer as a strategic purchaser of health services and scale up the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) goal. The NHIF biometric registration was implemented alongside Electronic Claims Management System (E–Claim) to all NHIF contracted hospitals. E-Claim is also a digitization process that enables hospitals to launch their claims online to improve efficiency and reduce fraud, wastage, and abuse.

To register for the registration method, you and your dependents should visit the nearest NHIF branch with a copy of your identification documents and NHIF card. Once your details are verified, they will be captured online. You will not receive a new card. If you register as a new member, you will be given a registration number once your details are fed into the database. After verification, you will be identified using your fingerprint or a one-time password (OTP) at the facility of your choice. If you fall sick but are not biometrically registered, the health facility will biometrically register you before you seek any services.

If you have fingerprint challenges, perhaps due to a medical condition, or have dependants below seven years, you will access the services using a one-time pin sent to the principal’s mobile phone during pre-authorization. NHIF biometric registration in Nairobi The digitization process started in Nyeri County in June 2021. The registration is now happening in various counties across the country. Some counties that have begun the biometric registration are Laikipia, Nakuru, Homabay, Kisumu, Tharaka Nithi, and Taita Taveta.

In Nairobi, you can register in various NHIF outlets across the county or health facilities registered with NHIF. So far, more than one million Kenyans have been enrolled in the new scheme.
