Death toll rises to 30 in Kenya bus crash

A bus traveling from the central town of Meru to the coastal city of Mombasa plunged into the Nithi River, Tharaka Nithi County, some 40 meters (130 feet) below killing at least 30 people on Sunday evening.

Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the Modern Coast bus lost control after the vehicle developed brakes failure careering off a bridge and into the river.

Further reports indicate those injured were rushed to Chuka County Referral Hospital and PCEA Chogoria Mission Hospital.

The accident which occurred at around 6:30 p.m. local time saw the rescue operations suspended after nightfall. However, as of today (Monday) morning, at least 30 people had been confirmed dead following the accident and 10 others were in critical condition.

It is now emerging that Kenyans have been raising complaints on social media since 2016, calling on National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to take action over the same Modern Coast bus over what they termed “reckless driving”.
