59% of the World, 4.7 Billion People Awaiting Evangelism!

Recent statistics show that more than half of the world, a staggering 4.7 billion people are on social media. This 59% of individuals averagely spend 2 hours 29 minutes online daily. We the Christian faithful were left with the Great Commission, isn’t it high time we use social media to evangelize?

In Matthew 28:19, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”

In Kenya, it is no longer “weird” to see various WhatsApp or telegram groups sharing daily devotions and prayers for the day.

A study titled, “Social Media is an Effective Platform for Evangelizing” published, in Great Commission Research Journal 2022 by Trisney J. Bocala-Wiedemann revealed that a high percentage of respondents agreed that social media is effective for evangelism.

Here in Kenya, Elder John Ng’ang’a who is an administrator of such WhatsApp groups, said he created the groups to share the word of God with his friends with the hope that they will, in turn, share it with their friends.

The old stereotype that church “Christianity” is only for Sunday is slowly being broken down through such Devotional groups. “I struggled to pray! Aki nilikuwa ata nasahau. But through reading the daily scripture, and praying. I feel full,” said Taurus, a member of a devotional group.

If we don’t actively use Social Media as a tool for evangelism; confusion and poor doctrine are what we will cultivate amongst Christians. A study conducted by Probe Ministries showed that 60% of born-again Christians between the ages of 18-39 believed that, “Buddha, Muhammad, and Jesus are all valid paths to God.”

John 14:6 – “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” In the era where information is easily accessible. We cannot make the error of not speaking the truth of Christ.
