After an eventful parties primaries that were held in the better part of April all over the nation. Over 5,000 candidates have finally been processed to vie as independent candidates. This at least is a 2,000 increase in the number of independent candidates in comparison to the 2017 general elections data.
The high numbers may be attributed to the digitisation of the registration process. Speaking to a local station Ann Nderitu the Registrar of political parties stated, “We are not receiving any manual application, it is upon Kenyans then to go to the system which is easily accessible.”
Through the portal, the aspirants can complete their application, pay the set fees, and await their clearance. The deadline for the submission of the applications is set for 2nd May 2022; with the number of independent aspirants eying various seats projected that could still go up.
