Religious leaders have expressed concern over the decision by the government to lift the ban on GMO’s. The leaders led by Anglican church of Kenya Bishop Julius Wanyoike have hit out at the government for what they termed as contradicting the law in failing to conduct public participation before lifting the ban.
“Whereas there was public participation that led to the burning of GMO’s in Kenya 2012 we are highly disappointed that this time round there was no public participation in uplifting the ban,” Bishop Wanyoike said.
The clerics called on the government to put in place frameworks to check illegal introduction of GMO products in the country while saying planting GM seeds can not be sustained and will make farmers vulnerable.
“The truth is, we have food shortage in the country, people are dying but the fact that people are dying you cannot pick one thing and use it to solve all the problems. There are many other options that have not been considered like ecological systems that need to be observed. Biotechnology are many not GMO,” said Bishop Titus Masika who is the Founder of Christian Impact Foundation who argued that genetic transfiguration from one species to another is a religious issue.
The religious leaders called on the government to immediately reinstate the ban. Their call coming after the Azimio Party Leader Raila Odinga and Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, criticized clerics for failing to take a stand on use of GMO’s in the country, yet it’s a matter of grave concern to consumers.
The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition threatened to head to Parliament to petition President William Ruto’s Government lift on the Ban.
