Kiambu County has confirmed several cases of a cholera outbreak. 15 people have been rushed to various hospitals after showing symptoms of Cholera with two of them being in a critical condition. It is believed that the individuals contracted the disease after sharing a meal at a social event in Limuru.
Kiambu County Governor Kimani Wamatangi has cautioned residents over the outbreak to be more careful. As investigations are still on going to determine the source of the outbreak. “Sababu yetu ya kutangaza ni kutahadharisha watu wetu kwa sababu huu ugonjwa wa Cholera unasmbaa kwa haraka sana kama watu wasipochunga na kufuatilia kanuni na utaratibu ufaao ndio tujitibu sisi sote,” Kimani Wamatangi Kiambu Governor.
Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Symptoms in the early stages of infection include profuse watery diarrhoea, vomiting, rapid heart rate, loss of skin elasticity, dry mucous membranes, low blood pressure, thirst, muscle cramps and restlessness or irritability.
In another media address Kiambu governor confirmed that the cases were distributed as; 4 in Limuru, 4 in Ruiru, 3 in Kiambaa, 2 in Gatanga, and 1 confirmed cases each in Kiambu town, Juja and unknown area respectively.
“As a response to the outbreak, the Kiambu County has taken 10 measures to monitor and coordinate response to bring the cholera outbreak to an end and protect our people from the infectious disease,” Wamatangi said in a statement. 10 of the cholera patients have been discharged after receiving treatment.
