We are called to experience a deeper spiritual life when we allow the Spirit of God in us to grasp and deploy His truth in our lives. This reality is expressed in Psalm 42:7 when the Psalmist earnestly says:
“Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls”. We need to know that depth is the essence of the spiritual journey that we are making. We are expected to go deeper into God’s love and grace. The above Scripture seems to suggest that the depth of our souls cries out for a deeper and more intimate relationship with our Creator. It is about the depths of God answering to the depths of our human need. Thus, whatever depths there are in God, they appeal to corresponding depths in us and whatever the depths of our sorrow, desire, or necessity, there are correspondences in God from which full supplies may be obtained.
Indeed, the deep of divine redemption calls to the deep of human need. The deep of Christ’s wealth calls to the deep of the believer’s poverty. The deep of the Holy Spirit’s intercession calls to the deep of the believer’s prayer. There is, therefore, a place of deep intimacy with God Almighty where Spirit calls unto spirit. As such, to experience a deeper dimension of God’s presence, our souls must hunger and thirst for God. Intimacy with God is found only in the realm of the Spirit.
In the same way a deer pants for the safety and sustenance of water, that is how souls should long for God. Only a small percentage of believers ever really experience this kind of intimacy with God because of the price. Psalm 42:1-2 declares: “As the hart (male red deer) pants after the water brooks, so pants my soul after you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?” In the natural, the panting of the deer is an audible agonizing for the safety the waters provide when pursued by a predator. When the deer runs into the water, the predator can no longer detect its scent. Therefore, in addition to finding safety from its enemies, the deer finds relief from thirst in the waters. For us believers,
Intimacy with God is found only in the realm of the Spirit. Spiritually, our process of discovering a deeper dimension of God’s presence involves longing, thirsting, and seeking. We need to know that there is a place of deep anointing, deep presence, and deep intimacy with God Almighty where “deep calls unto deep” or Spirit calls unto spirit. It is a place that is so pure that every part of your being is consumed by the presence of Almighty God. It is a deep place where there is perfect communion between your spirit and every dimension of God’s presence. It is a place where the soul is deeply stirred up and there is a breakthrough in the spirit as “deep calls unto deep” (Psalm 42:7).
It is at times like these that words become inadequate, because spoken words are the expression of the mind and not the soul. Words cease, and you stop asking. Only your heart can speak as it erupts in worship. There is perfect harmony and perfect oneness as you bask in the glory of His awesome presence. In this glorious presence, your spirit begins to fellowship with Him crying out: “Oh, that I might know Him! Not the things He gives, or what He imparts, but Him!” Are you longing for such an experience?
