Understanding God’s Heavenly Servants: God’s Messengers

KEY SCRIPTURE: Luke 1:38 (KJV)
“And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.”
We live in a world of voices: pastors, prophets, mentors, Christian influencers, podcasts, and forwarded “words from God.” Have you ever heard someone say, “I cannot decide until I speak to my pastor,” or “I need the prophet to tell me what God is saying”? God certainly uses people; but there is a danger when the messenger slowly takes the place that belongs to God.
When Gabriel came to Mary, the angel delivered God’s message, but Mary did not become a follower of Gabriel. Her response was directed to the Lord: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.” The messenger brought the word; God retained the authority.
Joseph’s story shows the same pattern. Matthew 1:24: “Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:” Joseph did not spend his life chasing another angelic encounter; he obeyed what God had already made clear.
Friends, we should honour pastors, teachers, and spiritual leaders, but we must never enthrone them. A pastor can teach you Scripture, but cannot replace your prayer life or relationship with God. A prophetic word may encourage or confirm God’s direction, but it should never become a substitute for Scripture, wisdom, and personal obedience.
A genuine messenger makes you more dependent on God; not more dependent on the messenger. The messenger functions like a signpost; the sign is valuable because it points beyond itself. Godly leaders do not build your faith around their personality; they equip you to know Christ, understand His Word, and obey God faithfully within the community of believers.
Sometimes, what we call loyalty is actually spiritual dependence: we have turned the signpost into the destination.
Galatians 1:8 gives an even stronger safeguard: even if an angel were to preach a different gospel, that message must be rejected. The supernatural does not outrank Scripture. God’s Word remains the standard.
Thank God for the people He uses to speak into your life. Ask Him to help you honour them without giving them the place that belongs only to God. Pray that He makes you a believer who knows His Word, seeks Him, and obeys Him.
REFLECTION
1. Is there someone whose opinion or “word” I quickly trust more than Scripture and personal prayer?
2. After listening to spiritual leaders, do I become more attached to them, or more obedient to God?
