When God Redirects: Next Step

SCRIPTURE: ACTS 16:9-10
“A vision appeared to Paul in the night. There was a man of Macedonia standing, begging him and saying, ‘Come over into Macedonia and help us.’ 10 When he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go out to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the Good News to them.”

Have you ever prepared to make a difficult phone call, then put the phone down? You knew you needed to apologise, but questions filled your mind. What if they refuse to listen? What if they misunderstand me? What if the conversation makes things worse?

You knew what you needed to do. What you could not know was how the other person would respond.

We can approach God’s direction in the same way. We want to know the next step, but we also want assurance about everything that will follow.

Yesterday, we saw Paul and his companions reach Troas after their intended routes were blocked. Now, Paul sees a vision of a Macedonian man asking for help. The team understands this as God’s call to preach the gospel in Macedonia. They have a destination and a purpose, although the vision gives no complete account of how the journey will unfold.

Abraham’s story helps us understand this. God called him to leave his country and go to a land He would show him. Hebrews 11:8 says Abraham “obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.” He had God’s word and promises, and he began the journey while much remained unknown.

That can be difficult for us. We have responsibilities, people who depend on us and memories of things that did not work out. We wonder: Have I understood correctly? How will this affect my family? What if I fail? Will I have what I need?

These are honest questions. We can bring them to God, examine our understanding through Scripture and seek wise counsel. Having questions does not make us faithless.

Yet there comes a point when we need to examine what we are asking for. Are we seeking to understand what God requires, or are we insisting on knowing how everything will end? *The next step can be clear even when the outcome remains uncertain* . If every question must be answered before we respond, we may keep postponing a responsibility we already understand.

Look again at the response in verse 10. The Bible says, “ *we got ready at once* .” Their understanding of God’s call led to practical preparation. What they believed began to shape what they did next.

That detail brings this passage into our everyday lives. Preparation can be the beginning of obedience. We can arrange the conversation, correct the error, honour the commitment or begin making the necessary plans. We can act thoughtfully while trusting God with what remains beyond our control.

Return to that difficult phone call. You can choose a suitable time, prepare your words and take responsibility for your part. You cannot decide how the other person will respond. Waiting until you can guarantee their response may mean never making the call.

As we discern divine seasons and times, we need willingness to respond when God makes the next step clear. The question becomes: *What does faithfulness require of me now?*

You may still have questions as you begin. Let those questions become prayers you carry to God along the way. Today, take the faithful step that is clear, and entrust the unfolding journey to Him.

REFLECTION:
1. Am I still seeking direction, or am I asking for a guaranteed outcome before I will act?

2. What practical step of preparation or obedience can I take today in response to what is already clear?
