Proverbs 24:31-34.
I went by the field of the lazy man, And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding; 31 And there it was, all overgrown with thorns; Its surface was covered with nettles; Its stone wall was broken down. 32 When I saw it, I considered it well;
I looked on it and received instruction: 33 A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest; 34 So shall your poverty come like [f]a prowler, And your need like [g]an armed man.
To procrastinate is to put off something intentionally and consistently, always having an excuse why you cannot attend to it immediately. One quote I was taught early in life is, “Do not put off for tomorrow what you can do today!”
Procrastination is said to be one of the greatest tools that the enemy uses to ensure we do not do what we need to do. The deception in procrastination is the fact that you have not said no, you just haven’t got to get the job done. That knowing makes one feel that they are better off than the person who said no. It is better to deal with the person who says no, rather than the person who says they will, but they never get to do it. They keep getting your hopes up and then disappoint you.
The other deception in procrastination is the assumption that we will always have the time to get the job done. It is said that yesterday is gone and tomorrow is only a dream. What we have is now, and we must make the most of it. We are living on borrowed time, this should create an urgency in us to do what we need to do because soon our time on earth will be no more.
Some people lose out on great opportunities because they waited too long, they put off things for too long before they acted. The bible tells us that whatever our hands find to do, we should do it with all our might.
It is said that procrastination is the thief of time, and the best and only way to beat it is to act.
Start today!
May your field not be like that of the sluggard, with overgrown thorns and broken walls because you keep procrastinating.
Reflections:
What is that one thing you have been procrastinating about?
What is the real reason you have been procrastinating about this thing, and what have you lost because of hesitating?
What must you do to overcome and break free?
