Enemies of Purpose: Overcoming Fear

Numbers 13:32-33 NKJV‬
[32] And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. [33] There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”
It is said that fear is false evidence appearing real. Many of the things we fear are just a mirage or they will never come to pass. In todays passage, we encounter a powerful narrative about the consequences of fear and how it can prevent us from realizing our dreams and purpose.
The Israelites stand on the brink of entering the Promised Land, a dream that has sustained them through years of wandering. Yet, when faced with the report of giants inhabiting the land, their courage falters. The spies, except for Caleb and Joshua, spread a bad report, saying, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size” (NIV). Their fear magnifies the obstacles and minimizes their faith in God’s promise.
Fear distorts our perception, making our challenges appear insurmountable. Like the Israelites, we often focus on the “giants” in our lives—be it a personal goal, a professional aspiration, or a spiritual calling. Fear whispers that we are like grasshoppers, too small to make a difference or to overcome the hurdles before us. It paralyzes us, keeping us from stepping out in faith to claim the dreams God has planted in our hearts.
However, the story of Caleb and Joshua offers a different perspective. They saw the same giants but chose to focus on God’s faithfulness rather than the size of their adversaries. Their response teaches us that courage is not the absence of fear but the conviction to move forward despite it. When we trust in God’s promises, we can overcome the fear that keeps us from our dreams.
Reflective Questions:
What “giants” are you facing that may be causing fear to overshadow your faith?
How can you shift your focus from the size of your challenges to the strength of God’s promises?
What steps can you take today to move towards your dreams, even if it means stepping out in faith amidst fear?
