Matthew 25:14-15
14 “For it is just like a man who was about to take a journey, and he called his servants together and entrusted them with his possessions. 15 To one he gave five [b]talents, to another, two, and to another, one, each according to his own ability; and then he went on his journey.
The first thing we established is that God owns everything meaning whatever we have has been entrusted to us. Gods expectation is that we would be good stewards of what He has entrusted to each one of us. The master did not give out the same number of talents to each of his servants. One got five, another got 2 and the last got 1 and the bible finishes by saying that each according to their ability.
The amount that each was given was in relation to their ability to respond. Though God own everything, he allocates to each one based on their ability and his expectation is that each one of us will take responsibility over what has been entrusted to us.
Some of us fail to take responsibility because we do not even know what we have been given or because we see no value in what we have been given. Comparison causes us to devalue what we have been given and instead of taking responsibility we compare ourselves with others and instead of being grateful we start complaining.
The master did not tell the servants what to do with the talents but it was expected that they would multiply what they have been given, because each had the ability and the master knew it because it is he who gives us the ability. The one servant who did not multiply what was given to him received a harsh punishment. Not only did he hold back what was supposed to multiply, but with that he also became a stumbling block to the blessing flowing to the lives of others.
We each must ask ourselves what God has given us and the ask ourselves further, what we are doing with what we have been given. When we go back to the start, we see God the owner of everything create everything and then he gives man dominion over what he had created. Man is to take responsibility and dominion over what God owns and the same still applies to date.
Think about this, the servant who begun with 5, ended with 10 while the one who begun with 2 ended up with 4. This tells me that we can increase our ability by taking responsibility. It’s not where you start, its about where we finish and we determine where we finish.
