Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul Wainaina has been suspended for 30 days over a land row between the university and the Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The suspension of Prof.Wainaina comes a few days after President Uhuru Kenyatta openly blasted him for claiming that the land allocated to World Health Organization (WHO) does not belong to the Referral Hospital.
According to the VC the University Council refused to cede approximately 500 acres of land that the Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua had requested them through a series of letters to give out.
“Probably this is the last time I am talking to you as a VC,” Professor said while explaining what happened regarding the land row to the staff members, “As a follow up and to effect this decision you are requested to surrender the title deed for LR 11026/2 to enable the Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning to carry out the excision as directed by the cabinet,” the letter from the Head of Public Service read in parts.
The University Council was being asked to surrender the title deed or submit the letter of authority or consent as the title holder of the land in question to enable the Ministry of Lands officials to carry out the physical planning exercise.
The embattled VC and the Council all pronounced themselves that they were not able to cede the land to the government with a sole reason that the University had other plans for the said land.
The University Deputy Vice Chancellor in-charge of the Academic Affairs Prof.Waceke Wanjohi has been appointed acting VC while the former University of Nairobi Prof. Crispus Makau Kiamba will now chair the new Council.
Prof. Paul Wainaina is now being investigated for insubordination and misconduct.
