In a judgement delivered today July 22 2022, by Lady Justice Jessie Lessit, has found 3 Administration Police officers and an informant guilty and convicted them for the brutal murder of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda and taxi driver Joseph Muiruri.
Judge Lessit ruled that the report in court shows that the three victims were killed.
“Expert findings on the cause of death of the three were clear and it is that they were murdered,” she ruled.
In 2016, Lawyer Kimani, an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, his client and the taxi driver Joseph Muiruri were abducted after they were last seen at a police station in Syokimau. That day, the lawyer who worked with International Justice Mission and his client Mwenda had attended a court session in Mavoko for a case that was filed by Mwenda against a police officer.
Their disappearance caused public outcry with thousands participating in demonstrations around the city of Nairobi and across the country calling for speedy investigations into their abduction. Two weeks later, the bodies of the three men were found nearly 100km away in a river in Ol Donyo Sabuk.
Willie Kimani had been representing Mwenda in court due to a previous encounter between him and the police. Mwenda was shot in the right arm by a senior police officer Fredrick Leliman who was stationed at Syokimau Administration Police Camp.
Mwenda who was a boda boda rider, was then taken to court and charged with possession of narcotics and gambling but lodged a complaint with the IPOA against the officer regarding the shooting and the subsequent charges.
