Stakeholders now want FGM included in the Education Curriculum

In Kenya 21 percent of women and girls, aged between 15-49 have undergone some form of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Kenya, this is according to the United Population Fund. With UNICEF reporting that about 4 million women, or 1 in 5 women, have undergone the cut. The situation gets more grotesque with global statistics showing that over 200 million girls are at risk of taking the cut each and every year.

Stakeholders in the fight against FGM are advocating for the outlawed practice to be entrenched in the curriculum. The stakeholders noted that some of the key issues affecting the society are classified as extra curriculum. The calling for the societal issues to be given more prominence to create more public awareness.

We saw it fit to bring the conversations to the university students. As they will be parents in the near future. And when they give birth to girls they will protect them against FGM,” Bernadette Loloju- CEO Anti- FGM board.

The stakeholders were speaking in Embu University under the campaign dubbed “tubonge na comrades”. An initiative that seeks to bring the conversation against FGM across all learning institutions.
