On March 29, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will be admitted to the East African Community (EAC), according to EAC Secretary-General Dr. Peter Mathuki.
Dr. Mathuki spoke at a Nairobi event commemorating the 22nd anniversary of the Regional Centre on Small Arms.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a signatory to the Nairobi Declaration on Small Arms and Light Weapons.
DRC applied to join the EAC in 2019 with the goal of expanding and strengthening its trade relations with EAC member countries.
It has only had bilateral contacts in the past.
After months of talks, the EAC’s Council of Ministers, the bloc’s highest decision-making body, approved DRC’s membership last month.
