100 civilians, 16 police officers murdered by bandits in the last six months in the North Rift region

Government starts disarmament exercise in the troubled North Rift

During the last 6 months, over 100 civilians and 16 police officers have been brutally murdered by bandits in the Northern Rift Valley region.

The bandits and livestock rustlers have in recent days escalated their terror on innocent Kenyans and law enforcement agencies and in the process burnt down schools, police vehicles and other social amenities.

During the attacks hundreds of Kenyans have been displaced from their homes.

The Government of Kenya has so far determined the security situation currently in the North Rift Valley Region as a National Emergency.

The Government on Monday, February 13, ordered all persons across the country holding illegal firearms and ammunition to surrender them immediately and unconditionally within three days failure to which culprits will meet the full force of the law.

Through a statement from the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, the Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki declared through a Gazette Notice that Turkana, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Laikipia and Samburu Counties as “disturbed” and “dangerous” areas.

The call for disarmament comes after President Ruto ordered for a joint operation invloving the National Police Service and the Kenya Defence Forces within the troubled area in efforts to weed out bandits.
