John 4:24 NKJV
24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
What is worship? For many, it may be the slow songs we sing in church, or even the amount of money we give in church. That may be a part of it, but there is so much more that goes into worship. The Webster’s Dictionary,1828 says this about worship:
Worship is to honour with extravagant love and extreme submission.
Worship is the priority that each believer places on God in their life. When you look at it that way, it then means that worship is a lifestyle and not an event. True worship stems from the heart and is expressed through our lifestyle.
We are to love the Lord our God with all our hearts, minds and soul. Jesus says that God is looking for those who will worship Him in spirit and truth. God is looking at our hearts because it is so easy to go through the motions and yet, our hearts are far removed from him. He desires that we would love him and worship him genuinely from our hearts.
We worship God because he is God and there is none higher than him.
As an assembly of believers, we come together not just to edify one another and to fellowship, but most importantly to worship our God.
The more we grow in our relationship with God, the more we will desire to worship him and the more we will become like him. The reverse is also true, when we drift away from God we will not desire to worship him and neither will we exhibit his likeness.
As human beings, we are created with an innate desire to worship. Worshipping the wrong thing will destroy our lives. When we worship the true God, then we are rejuvenated and his life flows in us. In fact, I believe that worshipping God is more for our good than his. He is God, and he is complete without us. Besides, there are legions of angels in heaven who worship him consistently.
When we truly worship him, then we become more and more like him.
