Understanding Prayer: The Purpose of Prayer

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NKJV
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Prayer is such a vital part of the life of a believer, but the sad reality is that many believers struggle in this area of their Christian walk. Even the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray, probably because they saw the effectiveness of prayer in the life and ministry of Jesus.
It is said that when you do not understand the purpose of something, then you will most likely abuse it. I came across a simple acronym to remind us on the purpose of prayer and that acronym is ACTS
The A stands for ADORATION. This is to express our deep love and respect for God. It is to show respect and worship to God All Mighty, recognizing that he is God and besides him there is no other.
The C stands for CONFESSION. We come to God in prayer to confess our sins and ask for forgiveness. He said that if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us all our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
The T stands for THANKSGIVING. We come to God in prayer to offer thanksgiving because we are grateful for all he has done. The Bible says enter his gates with thanksgiving and give him praise.
The S stands for SUPPLICATION. To make supplication is simply to make our requests known to God. The Bible says that when we pray we have the confidence that he hears us, and we know that if he hears us, then he will grant us our supplications.
When you take a closer look at the Lord’s prayer, the prayer Jesus gave his disciples when they asked him to teach them how to pray, you will find these 4 things.
Our connection with God is of utmost importance because without him then we don’t have life because the life we have he breathed it into us. The way to stay connected with him is through his word and prayer.
Reflections
Why do you pray, or why is prayer not vital to you?
What are some things that you can thank God for today?
