Devotion: Are you confident to enter the holy of holies?

Exodus 25:10 NKJV

“And they shall make an ark of acacia wood; two and a half cubits shall be its length, a cubit and a half its width, and a cubit and a half its height.”

The ark of the covenant was located in the Holy of Holies of the tabernacle of Moses. This place was separated by a veil such that when you were in the holy place, you could not see into the holy of holies. It is this veil that was torn into two when Jesus died, signifying that men now had access to the holy of holies.

Only the High priest had access to this place. He could only enter into it once a year on the day of atonement.

Inside the ark were three items all of great significance.

The tablets that God gave Moses containing the 10 Commandments were the first items in the ark. This was and is a reminder of God’s law, God’s word. Jesus said that man cannot live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.

Next we had the jar of manna signifying God’s provision. He is Jehovah Jire our provider. He provided for and sustained the children of Israel for 40 years.

Lastly, we had the rod of Aaron which budded. This is a reminder of God’s leadership. If we trust him with all our hearts and lean not on our  understanding, then he will direct our path.

The cover of the ark that had two cherubims with their wings spread out was the mercy seat of God. It is because of his mercy that we can even approach him. This was God’s throne and the holy of holies was God’s throne room.

Just as the high priest would enter this place with reverence and in God’s stipulated way, may we also enter with the same attitude and in the same manner.

Hebrews 4:15-16 NKJV

For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Reflections.

  • How do these three items and what they represent direct and affect your life?
    • The Tablets of the law
    • The jar of manna
    • The rod of Aaron that budded
