2 Kings 4:2 NKJV
So Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.”
Small things are big things in the hand of God. This woman, a widow, was distressed because her two sons were to be taken away unless she paid up what was owed. In her eyes, she had nothing except a jar of oil. That seemingly insignificant jar of oil is what God used to save her sons and provide for her.
The man of God tells her to go to her neighbors and borrow as many empty jars of oil as she can, then lock herself in her house and fill those empty jars from her seemingly insignificant jar of oil. That is how God provided for her because the oil did not stop flowing until there was no more empty jar to fill up.
Think about God asking Moses what he has in his hand, and all he had was a seemingly insignificant shepherds staff. That is what God used to perform many miracles, and it became known as the rod of Moses.
Then there is the Boy with his seemingly insignificant lunch of 5 loaves and 2 fish. That is what Jesus used to feed 5000 men not counting the women and children after which they collected 12 baskets full of what was left over.
We live in a word where bigger or more is deemed as better and a measure of success. Thus, we strive for more and bigger. In the quest for bigger and greater, we may ignore or despise the little things that God has placed in our hands, not recognizing that God can use the seemingly insignificant things to do great and mighty things in our lives.
Remember David brought down the mighty giant Goliath not with a bomb or rocket launcher but with just one stone, a seemingly insignificant stone.
As Jesus said, he whoever is faithful will the little, more will be entrusted to him.
Reflections.
What are the seemingly insignificant things you may have despised in your life?
Have you become ungrateful and frustrated because you are only looking out for the big things which seem not to be coming your way?
A mustard seed is small, but within it is the potential and life of a gigantic tree. What are some things in your life like the mustard seed?
