The Church E-waste Drive

Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK) a coalition of all major faith communities in Kenya that works together to deepen interfaith dialogue and collaboration in the country has today with Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Centre (WEEE Centre) signed a framework of collaboration on awareness creation and safe disposal of electrical and electronic waste at places of worship across the country.

The partnership will see religious leaders and religious spaces promote e-waste management services, implement national policies for reuse, repair, refurbishment & recycling of electrical & electronic equipment to protect the environment & public health & promote national development.

“We are extremely happy and honored to be part of this partnership, our mission is centered around securing a green and safe environment through the provision of e-waste management. We look forward to future collaboration and to spread this word even further across.” Simone Andersson, Chief Commercial Officer at the WEE Centre

Electronic waste (e-waste) has proven to be a fundamental challenge for Kenya over the years. Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Centre states that Kenya generates over 51.3 thousand tons of electronic waste (e-waste) each year from electronic devices such as computers, monitors, printers, mobile phones, fridges, and batteries. This shows how e-waste is becoming not only Kenya’s but the world’s fastest domestic waste stream mainly contributed by high consumption rates of electronic equipment, brief life span, and few repair options.

Unfortunately, here in Kenya, the situation is not getting any better due to a lack of e-waste awareness, along with poor separation and disposal systems. Together, with the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK), the partnership and the MOU will raise awareness of environment-friendly and safe ways of electronic waste (e-waste) disposal.

The strategic meeting on suitable ways to implement the MOU was also attended by Sujatah Kotamraju, Chair Environment and Climate Change Program at IRCK.
