Self Discipline: Disciplined Thinking

Philippians 4:8
And now dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
It is said that the most dominant thoughts direct the course of your life. The Bible confirms this by saying that as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. If that is the case, is it not a wonder that many of us don’t think about what we think? When was the last time you deliberately took the time to reflect on what thoughts you have allowed to dominate your mind?
The input in our minds determines the words we speak and ultimately, our actions. You have to program your thoughts to determine your actions, and that takes discipline. Our default setting is to think negative impure and defeated thoughts. What we allow as input into our minds does not help either. All you have to do is just watch the news on any day, and most of the news you see is negative in nature. Knowing that our thoughts determine our words character and action, you and I have to be deliberate in the way we think.
Like someone said, we are not what we think we are, but what we think, we are!
Garbage in, garbage out, and so we have to train ourselves to think and fix our thoughts on what is true and honorable. Before we allow a thought to take root in our minds, ask yourself, is it true and honorable?
Remember, Jesus is the way, the truth and the life and so what He says about you is the truth and not the reality that you may be facing on the ground. Are you thinking about things that are right, pure and lovely? Those are the thought you allow to take root in your mind so that they can become words and then actions. Think about things that are admirable and worthy of praise. If you are struggling with impure thoughts, then examine what you are allowing to settle in your mind.
Remember, “you cannot stop birds (thoughts) from flying over your head, but you can stop them from building a nest on your head.”
A renewed mind is the only legit way to transform our life. Renew your mind by reading the word of God because like water it will wash away all the filth as you get to understand the truth. Romans 12:2 tells us not to be conformed to the patterns of this world, but we should be renewed in our minds because once a seed is planted there it will eventually become an action.
Reflections
What are the dominant thoughts you have about your life?
How have your thoughts affected your life?
What thoughts does the word of God want you to have about you?
