Seasons of Change: The Betrayed Brother

‭Genesis 37:19-20 NKJV‬
[19] Then they said to one another, “Look, this dreamer is coming! [20] Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, ‘Some wild beast has devoured him.’ We shall see what will become of his dreams!”
When we think of betrayal, the first name that comes to mind is Judas. How was one of the disciples who walked with Jesus but sadly his love for money drove him to betray Jesus which led to his crusifixion. Betrayal stings the most when it comes from family and close friends than your enemy because you don’t see it coming.
Joseph was betrayed by his brothers and sold into slavery, a heart-wrenching experience. Such betrayal and abandonment could lead to bitterness and hopelessness. Yet, Joseph’s story reminds us that God can turn even the darkest times into something good. In our lives, betrayal by those we trust can be devastating. Whether it’s a friend’s disloyalty or a colleague’s backstabbing, such experiences challenge our faith.
Romans 8:28 reassures us that God works all things for our good. This promise is not conditional on our understanding of how things will turn out but on our trust in His purpose.
Joseph’s resilience and hope in God’s promises are exemplary. Even in slavery, he maintained hope and found favor in his circumstances. This teaches us that, despite betrayal, God’s favor is still be with us. We should hold onto hope and continue to seek God’s purpose in our lives.
The most important thing is to guard our hearts. We may not have control over what others do to us but we have the control of how we respond to it. Joseph did not allow bitterness resentment and unforgiveness to take residence in his heart after his brothers betrayed him. No wonder the favor of God continued to rest on him no matter where he was.
Reflections
1: How have you experienced betrayal or abandonment in your life? How did you respond to it?
2: In what ways can you see God working for your good, even in difficult circumstances?
3: How can you cultivate resilience and hope when facing betrayal?
