The High Court has ruled against Kenya Kwanza presidential running mate Rigathi Gachagua, and orderd that he surrenders Sh202 million to the state. In a ruling delivered by Lady Justice Esther Maina on Thursday, July 28, ruled that he failed to explain how he acquired the wealth from government agencies.
“The court finds that the funds are liable to forfeiture as the Assets Recovery Authority (ARA) has discharged its burden of proof that the funds were received by Gachagua,” Justice Maina ruled.
The court found that the money that had been frozen by state agencies amounted to proceeds of corruption ant that the Mathira MP acquired the money from government agencies without supplying any goods or services.
Gachagua, has responded to the court ruling ordering him to forfeit Ksh202 million to the government arguing that he would appeal the decision of the Anti-Corruption Court, accusing the Judge of being partisan.
While speaking during the Deputy Presidential Debates 2022, the William Ruto’s running mate had maintained his innocence, stating that he was being vilified because of supporting the DP.
He once stated that if elected to the office and Kenya Kwanza Alliance is declared the winner of the August 9 presidential election, he would recover the money and use it to benefit the people of Nyeri county.
