Nigeria Decides: Bola Tinubu declared President-Elect

The candidate of All Progressives Congress Party (APC) Bola Tinubu has been declared the winner of Nigeria’s presidential election by the Electoral Commission, in an election that Observers said polls were mostly peaceful.

Mr Tinubu, 70, is a wealthy businessman and former governor of Lagos state, who ran for president for the first time, promising to challenge the two-party system and help stem the tide of violence and instability.

While the Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi who finished behind Tinubu are likely to head to court to challenge the win, the ruling All Progressive Congress Party has urged the opposition to accept defeat.

President Muhammadu Buhari is stepping down after serving two terms, marked by economic stagnation and growing insecurity around the country – from an Islamist insurgency in the north-east, a nationwide crisis of kidnapping for ransom and separatist attacks in the south-east.
