Matthew 7:24, 26 NKJV
“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:
“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:
One important thing to note in this story is that both men heard the words of Jesus, but hearing alone is not enough. Hearing alone will not transform your life. After hearing, each man had the choice on what to do with what they had heard, and the same choices are available to us today.
Jesus tells us the repercussions of building our houses on sand, but the interesting thing is that we still have people in church who chose to ignore the words of Jesus and build their houses on sand. For some reason, we have this weird belief that things will be different for us
Building on the sand is taking the easy way out, things move fast and may look good until a storm comes and then the lack of character and roots is exposed.
To build on the rock is hard work, and it takes time. It is building according to the direction and leading of God, it’s like Noah building the ark. It took time, lots of time and a lot of hard work and dedication, something that many people are not willing to do today because we love shortcuts.
As someone so wisely put it, we have been given the power to choose, but we have no power over the consequences attached to our choices. In as much as Jesus has warned us about how to build on the right foundation and its importance, we still build on the sand. Once the storm comes and our life falls in a thud, we blame God and ask him why he would allow such to happen to us, yet he had warned us.
Joshua 24:15 NKJV
15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of [a]the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Choices have consequences, may we be as wise as Joshua to boldly decide that regardless of what we will serve the Lord and build our houses on the ROCK. May we grow not to be the kind of believers filled with information that does not transform us because we just hear the word and don’t do as it says.
