Romans 4:20,21
He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.
Abrahams story is one that inspires our walk of faith. His circumstances were impossible and yet he believed God would do just what he had said. Abrahams faith in God was so intact that when God asked him to sacrifice his own son, Abraham did not flinch.
One of the main hindrances to Faith is doubt. God tells us that his ways are higher than our ways and thus if faith is believing what God says, it becomes a struggle because the things he says seem impossible to us. When the prophet Elisha declared that by this time tomorrow a seah of fine flour shall be sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Samaria, the royal officer doubted. He did so because humanly speaking, it was impossible that such a thing would occur. As declared by the man of God, he saw it but did not partake of it.
James 1:6-7 NKJV
6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
Fear is another issue that hinders our faith. Every time anyone in the Bible had a visitation from angelic beings, the first thing they were told is to fear not. God has not given us a spirit of fear but one of power love and a sound mind. Fear gives birth to worry which also becomes a barrier to faith. Jesus commanded us not to worry about what we shall eat or drink but rather we should seek first the kingdom.
God and his word are the object of our faith. Jesus is the word of God because in the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God. When Jesus came walking on the water, Peter asked Jesus to call him to come on the water and Jesus said come. Peter jumped onto the water and his focus was on Jesus. He was not walking on the water but rather on the word that Jesus had given him. The moment he took his gaze off of Jesus and he focused on the waves and the storm, Doubt, fear and worry crept in and he begun to sink. He could no longer walk on the qord that Jesus had given him because of doubt and fear and he begun sinking.
