The Songs of Christmas: Mary’s Song

Luke 1:46-48 NJKV
46 And Mary said:
“My soul [i]magnifies the Lord, 47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. 48 For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.
Mary was just a teenager when the angel Gabriel visits her with the unbelievable news that she will be heavy with child by the Holy Spirit and this child will be the promised Messiah. She takes off to visit her relative Elizabeth who although considered barren is now also heavy with child through God’s intervention. When Mary gets there, Elizabeth gives a prophetic declaration inspired by the Holy Spirit and then Mary gets into song.
Mary’s prophetic song talks about how God has regarded the lowly state of his servant and how henceforth all generations will call Mary blessed. God is truly amazing and he keeps his promises. The birth of Christ is truly the ultimate demonstration of God’s love for us. This song talks of God’s mercy upon those who fear him from generation to generation. The Bible tells us that his mercies are new every morning and they endure forever.
As for the proud, God scatters them in the imagination of their hearts and he puts down the mighty from their throne.
God exalts the lowly and feeds the hungry with good things. As the bible says, blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled.
Mary finishes her song by recounting how God has remembered Israel and had mercy on her. God remembered the promise he spoke to their father Abraham and now it was the set time for that promise to be fulfilled.
This Christmas season, this song should remind us of God’s faithfulness and his mercies. It should remind us that our God is a covenant-keeping God and that which he promised he will deliver. May we never forget God regards the lowly and those who truly hunger and thirst after him. He remains faithful forever.
