The Names of God (Part II): El-Shaddai

Genesis 17:1-2
When Abram was ninety-nine years old the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless, that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly.”
This week, we revisit a conversation we began a few weeks ago and look at some more names of God. Today, we take time to discover God’s name as especially revealed to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – El-Shaddai. This name has been translated into English as God Almighty since it signifies God’s power to accomplish everything He says and desires. The first mention is what has been captured in our text today when God appeared to Abraham at ninety-nine years. He had made a promise to Him when He was seventy-five years in Genesis 12. Now, he was ninety-nine years, and he had not yet realised the promise.
It is at this point that God appears to Him and reveals Himself as the Almighty One. He reiterates His covenant with Abraham and commands Him to walk before Him and be blameless. Why was it important that God reveals Himself as He did to Abraham in this text? Because by all natural indications, the promise of God could not be fulfilled by this old couple. The odds of nature were against them to have a child of their own. Yet God had spoken, and what He says must come pass. Why? Because He is the Almighty, meaning He is the One that has ALL the MIGHT. He says, and it comes to pass as He did during creation. And if He was able to create everything from nothing and without any reference, then giving a child to a couple beyond the age of child-bearing was nothing to Him. When El-Shaddai speaks, it comes to pass, and throughout the Scriptures and the history of God’s people, He has continued to provide, preserve, and multiply His people through His Word. The Centurion must have had this revelation when He spoke to Jesus:
The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.” (Matthew 8:8)
All we need from the Lord God Almighty, El-Shaddai, is  for Him to speak a word, and it shall be well with us.
