The Last Sayings of Jesus: It is Finished!

John 19:30
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
So much is captured in this very last saying of Jesus. The purpose for which He had come was finished. All of the Scriptural fulfillment was finished. Even more, the entire cup of God’s wrath was finished. He had drunk it all. This same cup that He dreaded at the Garden of Gethsemane, He had drunk it to the last drop. Therefore, for those who put their faith in Him, God’s wrath is no longer upon them. Justice had been served and therefore we can walk free. The days of our slavery to sin are finished. And even the dread of death is finished. It is only after all was done that Jesus breathed His last. Therefore, there is nothing more we can do other than believe in Him. Everything that was to be done to warrant salvation, He did. All this Christ did for love. All this He did for me.
Behold the man upon a cross:
My sin upon His shoulders;
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished;
His dying breath has brought me life:
I know that it is finished.
Reflections
1. Do you sometimes feel the urge to work for your salvation? Be reminded today that all was finished at the cross.
2. Do you sometimes feel like God is angry at you? Be reminded today that if you are a believer, Jesus drank the full cup of His wrath on your behalf.
