Do you remember when you got born again? Think of the zeal you had for God and how you loved him. How you had such a hunger for the word of God and you wanted to know more about him and the plan he had for your life. Think about the hunger in your soul at the time, a hunger to please him only and no one else, the kind of hunger that made others think you were crazy.

The question is, is that still the case?

The church in Ephesus had some good things going and Jesus takes note of them. This church worked hard and they persevered and endured hardships for the sake of the Lord, but despite all that good, they had lost their first love.

It is easy after you have been saved for a while to lose your first love and not even know it. You get so engrossed in the doing that you slowly drift away from loving God and you do not even realize it.

Remember, Jesus told us that we are to love the Lord with all our hearts mind, and soul. Our love for him has to be solid and true and it has to be the foundation upon which we do everything else.

We can serve God yet we have lost our first love for him. When this happens then we begin to focus on the doing as proof that we love him, the more we do the more we think we love him instead of loving him first, and because of the deep love we have for him, then what we do flows from that.

Just like the church in Ephesus, Jesus is calling us to repent, meaning to change our ways and to go back to that first love that we had for him otherwise he will come and remove our lampstand from its place meaning that his presence and the recognition that we belong to him will no longer be with us because we have refused to repent.
