Recipe For Revival: Humility and Brokenness

2 Chronicles 7:14 NKJV
14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
One of the first conditions that God gives his people to do if he is to come in and heal the land is humility. We must humble ourselves for God to send revival. Where pride and arrogance thrive, then God cannot send revival. The bible tells us that God resists the proud, and he lifts the humble. We sometimes focus so much on the doings that we forget that God is more interested in the motives of our hearts. Doing that which seems right but with a bad motive is not acceptable before God.
To be humble and broken before God is to come to the place of realization that without God we are nothing. The bible says that our righteousness is as filthy rags before him. There is nothing in us that we can take pride in because it is all filthy before God.
To be broken before God is to fully depend on him and to seek him for him and not because of what he can give us. It is said that God uses broken vessels and just like the Lord told Paul, His strength is made perfect in our weakness.
The bible says that the heart of man is exceedingly wicked. We must always be at a place of brokenness before God, asking him to search our hearts and try our ways that he may see if there is any wickedness in us. The thing with our hearts is that wickedness may be laying there waiting for the right opportunity to show forth its ugly head. It is only God who can see what in our hearts, even those things that are dormant.
When we are in a place of self-righteousness, and we think we are OK, then we see no need for God in our lives, and thus we will not hunger after revival. It takes humility to recognize and accept that you have lost your first love and the life of God is sipping away from you.
Think about these five broken things in the Bible and the results achieved by them:
Broken pitchers (Judges 7:18,19) and the light shone out
A Broken Box (Mark 14:3) and the ointment was poured out
Broken Bread (Matt 14:10) and the hungry were fed
A Broken Body (I Cor 11:24) and the world was saved
A Broken will (Psa 51:17) and a life of fulfilment in Christ.
It is only when we humble ourselves before the Lord, then He will lift us up.
