Lessons from Zacharias: Stay Faithful

Luke 1:5‭-‬7 NKJV
There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years.
One of the first things we are told about Zacharias and Elizabeth is that they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. This is significant because of the times they were living in. Between the last book of the Old Testament and the first book of the New Testament, we have a gap of about 400 years known as the
Intertestamental period. This was not an easy period because it was filled with evil and oppression. It was a period where the heavens seemed silent, it seemed like God had given up on his people, but something amazing was in the making.
It is in this kind of generation that we find Zacharias and His wife and both had decided to walk blameless before the Lord. Despite what was happening around them, despite what the majority may have been doing, they walked with God.
We live in a generation where righteousness is looked upon as old-fashioned something that has been surpassed by the times. Many are embracing evil and calling it good. The question each one of us should ask ourselves is, “Will I remain faithful to God and his ways? Will I still believe even when it seems like heaven is silent and my prayers are not being answered?”
Zacharias and Elizabeth made a choice, and for the Bible to give us this detail about them, it means they were serious in their walk with God. If something were to be written about your life, would your walk with God be so significant that it becomes one of the first thing the writer says about you?
May we make the resolve to remain faithful to God in this wicked and perverse generation.
