Matthew 5:14-15
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
We can only be the light of the world because of Jesus who lives in us. Remember, Jesus is addressing his disciples in these scriptures, those who have believed in him and are patterning their lives after his. Jesus declares in;
John 8:12
12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
It is because of him that we have the light of life shinning from our lives. Salt works behind the scenes, it is invisible but you can feel its effects. Light on the other hand is visible and it works on the outside. It reveals what is wrong and false while helping to produce what is righteous and true.
As believers we are the light that the world needs because it has rejected God. As light we must then not hide ourselves or be ashamed but rather we must be bold to bring light where there is darkness. Every time there is light no matter how small, the darkness rolls away. There can never be such thick darkness that it overwhelms the light. Light will always shine no matter the amount of darkness even if the light is that of a tiny fire fly. Light exposes and it causes us to see. When we see then we know what is wrong and we are able to make adjustments. As believers who know the truth, when we walk in it then we expose the lies of the enemy and our actions challenge others to walk in the light.
Just as one cannot confuse darkness with light, we should not be confused with those who are still walking in darkness. Our way of life should be based on the truth that is the light that comes from the word even as the Psalmist says that Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
As the song says, “This little light of mine, am gonna let it shine” If we all shone our “little” lights in whatever space God has planted us, collectively, the light of God would shine over our nation.
Reflections
- What frustrates you the most when there is a power blackout?
- Light always expels darkness, how are you expelling darkness in your community?
- Light also exposes, how are you exposing evil in your community?
