Psalm 1:2-3 (NKJV)
But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.
Psalm 1 beautifully illustrates the benefits for those who take God’s word seriously, delight in it, and obey its teachings. Such individuals are described as “blessed,” living in a state of divine favor. They don’t need to chase blessings or hope for them; they are inherently blessed.
This person is compared to a tree planted by rivers of water, signifying stability and nourishment. Their life, anchored in the Word, is continuously sustained because they find joy in following God’s ways. They are fruitful, as Jesus promised that those who abide in Him and His words will bear much fruit. God’s desire is for us to be abundantly fruitful, pleasing our Heavenly Father. As a result, their leaf does not wither, and everything they do prospers.
Both you and I surely aspire to be like the individual depicted in Psalm 1. God’s message to us is clear: to achieve this, we must delight in His Word, meditate on it day and night, and carefully follow its instructions. The outcome is assured success and prosperity.
Does this sound familiar? It should.
Joshua 1:8 (NKJV)
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Reflections:
1. What is your greatest challenge when it comes to delighting in the Word of God?
2. What do you love about the Bible?
3. What adjustments do you need to make to prioritize the Bible in your daily life? Are you willing to make those adjustments?
