Guard Your Heart: Rest in God and His Word

Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall [a]direct your paths.
The Bible tells us that the heart of man is exceedingly wicked. All you have to do is look at the world we live in and all the surrounding wickedness to know that this is true. In fact, if God left us to ourselves, we would destroy each other because of the wickedness in our hearts.
The best way to guard your heart is to fill it with God and his word. We are instructed to trust God with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding. To trust fully in God is to trust fully in his word. David says; “Thy word have I hidden in my heart, that I may not sin against you.” This then tells me that if I do not discipline myself to hide God’s word in my heart, then I open it up for other things to fill it that will drive me to sin against God.
When the word of God dwells in my heart, then I am able to meditate on it, just as Joshua was commanded to meditate on it day and night.
Meditating on God’s word will renew the way I think, I will no longer lean on my own understanding. Just as the book of Romans says; We are to no longer conform to the patterns of this word, but rather we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds so that we can prove what the will of God is.
To acknowledge God in all my ways means that do not take credit for anything because I recognize that all that I have, God gave it to me and without Him, I can do nothing. This enables me not to think of myself more highly as I should. My disposition then becomes one of humility and dependence on God, guarding my heart against pride.
When you and I do this and walk through this process, then God promises that he will direct our path.
May we always make this prayer that David did;
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23-24)
