Government Agencies Ready to Deal with Hate Speech

When it comes to Kenyan elections, the 2007/8 post-election violence still leaves a bitter taste and a dark hole in our history as a people. Our country known for prayers and cohesion then turned into a bloodbath. It is “believed” political leaders, vernacular radio stations instigated the violence through their rhetoric causing the “us” versus “them” mentality.

As a result of the violence the Kenya National Dialogue and Reconciliation team proposed various constitutional, legal and policy measures for purposes of promoting fairness which would result in a harmonious existence and national cohesion. The team led to the establishment of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has categorically stated that they are set for the General Elections. ”Our prosecutors & stakeholders countrywide are trained on election matters! We also have a 24-hour Call Centre with Toll Free Numbers to serve Mwananchi.”

The ODPP have also, “Established a Hate Speech and Election Justice Division to handle election and Hate Speech related offences. Instituted an Election Preparedness Committee to spearhead the implementation of the ODPP election strategies.”

Through the implementation of the different strategies, we hope that Hate Speech will be kept at bay this coming election. Remember there is a thin line between freedom of speech and hate speech; Choose your words wisely!
