Christmas Declarations: My Soul Magnifies the Lord

Luke 1:46-49
And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
The Magnificat. That is the term that has been used as a title to Mary’s song of praise in our passage today. In the song, Mary declares that her soul magnifies the Lord and her spirit rejoices in her saviour. She then proceeds to mention the various reasons why.
To magnify someone or something means to make them appear bigger than they are
However, when the Bible talks about us magnifying the Lord, it is talking about something different. We cannot make God to appear bigger than He actually is, but rather, we can make our view of Him bigger in order to accommodate His greatness. And all we need to do, like Mary, is to recount His great deeds over us and the entire world. When we do that, all of a sudden, God starts to become like who He truly is. This Christmas,  let us strive to make much of Christ and to have our spiritual senses heightened so that we may behold Him better and better, day by day.
Reflections
1. What is your understanding of magnifying the Lord?
2. How will today’s devotion affect your life and faith?
