Matthew 19:3-8
…He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery….” (Verse 8)
The subject of divorce and remarriage is not one to be handled casually since there are many people, including Christians, affected by this. Therefore, it is my hope that this devotional and the subsequent conversation later will be full of not just truth but grace as well. That said, the whole idea of divorce and remarriage begins from the conversation we had on Monday – one-flesh union. That God’s design and design is that a marriage ought to be permanent and only dissolved by death.
This was Jesus’ response when the Pharisees approached Him to test Him. They cited Moses and the leeway he gave, but Jesus took them back to the beginning. In other words, Jesus raised the bar for marriage so high that the disciples couldn’t help but utter in response, _“If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.”_ (Verse 10). To which He replied:
_Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it”_ (Verse 11-12).
There is more to be said, including the exception clause given by Christ, but time and space do not allow full expression of this matter. So, kindly join us at 6 am for a fuller engagement of this subject.
Reflections
1. What, in your opinion, is the reason why we have so many separations and divorce?
2. Are you divorced, or do you know someone who is? In Christ, there is still hope for you.
