When Jesus and the disciples got into the boat to cross over, there was no storm, things were calm. Suddenly, there was this massive storm that was threatening their lives. The sea of Galilee is about 680 feet below sea level, and it is surrounded by mountains. Winds sweeping over the lands come up over the mountains and create down drafts over the lake, and this causes sudden storms. This was one such storm and it was not relenting. The boat was already filling with water, with the waves ferociously beating against the ship. To make matters worse, this was happening at night.

In life we sometimes face storms that hit us suddenly and with such ferocity, some people don’t survive. It may be a financial storm, or a storm in your marriage, or even your health. The storm is sudden and ferocious and your whole world feels like it’s in a dark tornado, and you have no hope and no control.

Interestingly, Jesus was with them in the boat, and he was not panicking fact, he was asleep. How do you find the peace to sleep in a boat that is filling with water and the waves are tossing the boat all over the place?

This storm shook the disciple’s faith, as it so happens to us. They wake Jesus up and ask him,” don’t you care that we are perishing? How many times do we ask similar questions about God when storms we cannot understand hit our lives.

Jesus commanded the storm to be still, and the disciples saw a side of him that they had not seen before. They were in awe, and they wondered, who is this that even the winds and the seas obey him. Jesus is lord even over nature, he is Lord over every circumstance in your life.

The fact that Jesus questioned their faith tells us that storms come to shake and teat our Faith in God.
