Reboot for 2022: David, A Man after God’s Heart

2 Samuel 11:4‭-‬5 NKJV
Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house. And the woman conceived; so she sent and told David, and said, “I am with child.”
David was a great king who God used mightily to conquer the enemies of Israel. His story does not begin so well because when the prophet comes to his fathers house to annoint the next king of Israel, David is forgotten by his father but Gods hand was on him.
When as a young man he defeats Goliath, God sets him on a path that leads him to the throne and he becomes the king of Israel.
But in his victories and triumphs, David becomes careless and selfish and he embraces sin in his life something that greatly displeases the Lord. Not only does he sleep with one of his men’s wife, when he discovers the woman is pregnant he tries to set up the man Uriah to sleep with his wife so that it seems Uriah made his wife pregnant but when that does not work he has Uriah killed and he takes Bathsheba as his wife.
When God entrusts us with power and authority we sometimes make mistakes that seem hard or even impossible to recover from just like the situation David found himself in. His actions had consequences, this baby died and David’s family line was affected butt because David repented God restored him. Think about this, though the first child between David and Bathsheba died, the second son Solomon became the next king after his father David.
Paul in the new testament refers to David as a man after Gods heart.
Acts 13:22 NKJV
And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.’
This verse gives us a great key that we should all emulate. David had his mistakes but his heart was always after pleasing God. God says that this is a man who will do all my will meaning when I direct him he will follow.
We all make mistakes and we will keep making them from time to time, what’s important is to ensure that our hearts are in the right place always chasing after God and seeking to please him.
David did not allow his past to slow him down and neither should we, learn from the mistakes you made last year but don’t let them paralyze you, keep moving forward.
Reflections
What is that one sin that you never thought you would recover from?
What lessons did you learn from that sin or are you still wallowing in the same sin?
What lessons can you learn form how David responded to his sin and how God responded back to him?
