Spiritual Warfare: Prayer and Fasting

Matthew 17:21
However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting._ (NKJV)
The disciples had exercised spiritual power before – they had healed the sick and even cast out demons. In fact, the first time it happened, they so marvelled at the fact that demons came out at their word. However, on this occasion, they encountered a boy tormented by a demon that they could not expel. This really frustrated both them and the father of the boy until when Jesus came down from the mount of transfiguration. Upon arriving and seeing the chaos that had ensued, Jesus inquired what the matter was and the boy’s father shared his plight. After reprimanding him for his lack of faith, Jesus went ahead to heal the boy to the amazement of the disciples.
Later, while they were alone, the disciples asked Jesus why it was that they could not cast it out. He went on ahead to teach them about the power of faith, even as small as a mustard seed. He, however, added another detail – that the demon they were dealing with and its kind don’t come out unless by prayer and fasting. This shows the importance of prayer and fasting in the life  of the believer. That there are certain battles that need one to engage the gear of prayer accompanied with fasting. This does not mean that one begins to pray when the situation arises. Rather, it means that one is given to a lifestyle of prayer and fasting. If we commit to this, then we will emerge victorious in all the battles that we engage in.
Reflections
1. Is prayer and fasting a routine part of your Christian life? If so, how often do you fast?
2. What do you need to do to have these spiritual weapons as part of your arsenal?
