The Power of Love: Love Betrayed

2 Samuel 13:14-15 (ESV)
But he would not listen to her, and being stronger than she, he violated her and lay with her. Then Amnon hated her with very great hatred, so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, “Get up! Go!”
The deepest of pains are those inflicted by those who ought to love us. Many individuals continue to suffer trauma because of the betrayal they have experienced under the hands of their loved ones. This was the case for Tamar who was sexually molested by her own step-brother Amnon. Unable to control his animalistic lust, Amnon duped his sister to coming into his chambers only to overpower her and take advantage of her. He not only left her defiled and dejected but also condemned her to a lifetime of isolation – never to get married beacuse of the customs of the day. The one who should have loved and protected became the very knife thrust in her heart.
Cases of abuse within families are not uncommon. Small girls and even boys are taken advantage of and suffer incomprehensible pain. This could be your own story. You perhaps were taken advantage of either physically or emotionally by a close family member and this action left a deep scar. This has left you scarred and scared for life. Your relationships have been affected and you don’t trust anyone. If that is you, look to Jesus who is close to the broken-hearted. May He bring long-lasting healing to you.
Reflections
1. Have you had your love betrayed? There is hope and healing for you in Christ.
