Ephesians 4:1-3
I, therefore, the prisoner [a]of the Lord, [b]beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, 2 with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, 3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
As believers we have been called out of the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. Now that we are part of the kingdom of light, there is a way in which we are to walk. Humility is one character trait that should be evident in the life of every believer.
One of the best quotes I have heard about humility is one that says, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less!” To have an attitude of humility is to restrain from the urge to make yourself look more important than others, to show off. That is becoming harder to do with this generation because we are so quick to expose our lives on social media to show others how well we are doing.
The bible tells us in the book of James 4:10 that we are to humble ourselves before the Lord, and He will lift us up. Humility is not something we ask God to do for us; it is something we do ourselves. To be humble is to be lowly and modest; it is opposed to being proud or haughty, arrogant or assuming. It is only when we walk in humility that we will be able to bear with others in love .
Philippians 2:3 (ESV)
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
This tells me that humility is an attitude of the heart. It is only when we allow the fruit of the Holy Spirit to be formed in us that we see a change of the attitudes of our heart.
Humility should not be an event in our lives, it should be the way we live life everyday. The walk of faith is a walk of humility. It is an attitude that always remembers that it is not I but Christ who lives in me.
Reflections.
The Bible calls Moses the meekest man who ever lived, who is the meekest man you know today?
In what ways and areas does pride manifest in your life?
What does it mean to humble yourself before the Lord and are you doing it?
