Show me what things you are committed to, and I will tell you what kind of person you are and also who you are becoming.

One distinguishing factor about the early Church is the things they were committed to.

First, they committed themselves to the word, the apostle’s doctrine. Jesus told the disciples to teach others everything he had taught them. He had also declared that man CANNOT live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. That is how important the word is, it is the source of our spiritual life. Jesus said that if we abide in him and his word abides in us, then we can ask the Father whatever we need, and he will answer our prayer. The key is to be committed to his word because it makes us like him when we obey it.

The early church was also committed to prayer. It is said that a prayerless believer is a powerless believer, and let me add a proud believer. Proud because a lack of prayer is a declaration that I can do without God.

When the early church prayed, things happened, they were filled with boldness to preach, people were healed, demons were cast out, but most importantly, the Holy Spirit guided them. The Bible tells us to pray without ceasing, Jesus informed us that men always ought to pray and faint not.

Fellowship and breaking of bread were also things the early Church was committed to. They met daily in their homes and in the temple. Man was created for fellowship, and the church functions better in fellowship because it is a body.

These are things that the early church continued steadfastly in. It was not a casual commitment, these things took priority in their lives, this is The Great Commitment.

The question we each have to ask ourselves is; What things will I continue steadfastly in this year? What am I committed to?
