Proverbs 6:16-19 (ESV)
There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.
Our God, who eternally exists as the triune God in perfect unity, does not condone anything or anyone that divides people. And so, one of the saddest things to observe is when people that ought to love one another and live in unity disintegrate into disunity. Even more unfortunate is when it is one of them who keeps stirring the division, a brother who sows discord as the Bible puts it. This God hates and detests for He is a God who desires to see His people living together in peace, love, and harmony. And so, Paul would instruct Titus, “Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them. You may be sure that such people are warped and sinful; they are self-condemned.” (Titus 3:10-11).
Brotherly love and the unity of brethren is something that we should seek and strive for. Whether it is within our family setting or church, we must live at peace with each other. Indeed, as the Scriptures put it, each of us has the individual responsibility of doing everything that is dependent on us to live at peace with everyone (Romans 12:18). Let us watch out for any root of bitterness within us that might lead us to be the ones that scatter and sow seeds of discord. The harvest is tears and pain upon pain through many generations. Yet, if we follow the heart of God, we will live in unity with each other and enjoy His blessings. What a good and pleasant thing this is! (Psalm 133)
Reflections
1. Are there family or church members that you do not see eye to eye? Consider praying for God’s help in reuniting you with them.
2. In view of today’s devotion, how will you live your relationships?
