Overcomer! Overcoming Shame

Genesis 3:9-11
And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself. 11 And he said, Who told thee that thou was naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
We have all been there, done something that we shouldn’t have done or something that caused us embarrassment. Some of us can shake it off and move on with our lives while some of us are held hostage by such events and the weight of the shame enslaves us.
Shame and guilt are not the same. Guilt says what you have done is wrong while shame says what you have done is wrong therefore you are a bad person.
Adam and Eve did the very thing that God told them not to do. Guilt and shame flooded their lives. They realized they were naked and so they covered themselves with fig leaves. Shame leaves us exposed and like Adam and Eve, we try and cover ourselves with fig leaves. Things that cannot save us, temporary things.
Adam and Eve also hid from God or rather tried to hide from God in the trees of the garden. We cannot hide from God but shame will get us to try and hide in the weirdest of places.
Adam and Eve were hiding from the very God who had the solution to the problem they were facing.
Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
God stepped in and took away the guilt and shame from Adam and Eve and he has made the same provision for us today through Jesus Christ. Whoever is in Christ is a new creation and therefore there is no more condemnation over them.
Once we are in Christ, whatever we did is forgiven and forgotten this guilt and shame have no hold over our life anymore.
Reflections.
What incident brought shame and guilt over your life?
How did that shame affect your relationship with God and with others?
What does Romans 8: 1 mean to you?
