SCRIPTURE: Habakkuk 1:1-4 The prophecy that Habakkuk the prophet received.
How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save?
3 Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrongdoing?
Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict abounds.
4 Therefore, the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails. The wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted.
Sometimes, the person everyone asks to pray is the one struggling to find words for their own pain.
You encourage others. You remind them that God is faithful. Then, when you are alone, your own heart asks, “Lord, how long?”
Last week, we studied Living for God’s Approval. This week, we meet Habakkuk, a prophet in Judah, the southern kingdom of God’s people. He saw violence, conflict, and justice being twisted. The man who spoke for God was himself struggling to understand what God was allowing.
Habakkuk 1:2
“How long, LORD, must I call for help, but you do not listen?”
This was not the question of someone who had never prayed. His cry suggests he had been calling for help, yet the injustice continued. Perhaps you know that ache: not wondering whether God exists, but wondering why the God you love has not intervened.
Yet notice where Habakkuk takes his pain: to the Lord. He does not hide it behind spiritual language. This is lament: bringing grief and unanswered questions into the presence of God.
Psalm 62:8 says:
*”Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”*
Trust Him. Pour out your heart. Both belong in the same verse. You do not have to choose between believing God and telling Him that you hurt.
Bring Him the debt that keeps you awake, the marriage you hardly recognise, the name you cannot mention without tears. And when your own life is peaceful, carry someone else in prayer. Habakkuk was grieving over more than his own troubles.
Across these three chapters, we will follow him from honest questions, through listening and waiting, into worship. We begin here: God is our refuge, not someone we must impress with how well we are coping.
Beloved, you do not have to hide your hurt to honour God. Let Him hear the prayer beneath “I am fine.”
