How Long, Lord?: The Hard Answer

SCRIPTURE: Habakkuk 1:5-17

Habakkuk wanted God to stop the violence. The answer he received spoke of an army even more violent.

God announced that He was raising up the Babylonians to bring judgment on Judah. They were ruthless invaders, taking what did not belong to them (Habakkuk 1:5-11). Habakkuk had cried out against wrongdoing among his own people; now, he faced the prospect of a brutal nation invading his homeland.

The answer troubled Habakkuk. How could a holy God use people even more wicked than those they would conquer? His question in verse 13 arose from what he believed about God: surely the Holy One could not be indifferent to evil.

Habakkuk 1:12
“LORD, are you not from everlasting? My God, my Holy One, you will never die.”

In the middle of his struggle, he remembers who God is. Eternal. Holy. Still his God. In that same verse, he calls Him “my Rock.” His understanding is shaken, but he is still reaching towards the One he cannot fully understand.

There is something tender here for the heart disappointed by an outcome it prayed against. You can bring God difficult questions without surrendering everything you know of His goodness.

And trusting Him does not require calling cruelty good. God Himself describes the Babylonians as guilty: Habakkuk 1:11:Then they sweep past like the wind and go on—guilty people, whose own strength is their god.” Their power does not make their wrongdoing right.

Romans 8:32 says;
“He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all…”

At the cross, God has shown us His love at immeasurable cost. Do not read your illness or loss as proof that He is against you. You may not understand your circumstances, but they do not erase what He has shown you in Christ.

When someone else is hurting, offer your presence before your explanation. You do not need to know why it happened to sit with them, listen and pray.

Bring God what you cannot understand. You can be honest about your confusion without letting go of His love.

REFLECTION:
1. How do you trust God when His answer unsettles your expectations?
2. Which truth about His character do you need to hold alongside your unanswered question today?
